Happy New Year Members,

Staff
We say fond farewell to staff, Emma and Maddy, unfortunately they both are perusing different careers and education. But we also welcome Tanya as our new Food and Beverage Manager.

Building
As you may have seen that the fire water tanks are now in place and we are awaiting placement of the pumping station. With this progress we now have more trailer parking after the area has had a road base laid. Memorabilia is being reinstated back around the club thanks to the assistance of Kim Sorrell.

Trail Boaters
There is to be NO powering ramp boats onto trailers on the slips as witnessed several times recently, this undermines the river bed under the concrete ramp and may cause the slab to crack with no support under it. A reminder the speed limit is also 4 knots.

Social
The club treated patrons to an excellent Christmas Day Dinner, New Years Eve show and to finish with Habitat Garden Party on New Year’s Day. The annual Club raffle results are all on the club web site, congratulations to James Aps picking up the car for first place, thanks to all ticket buyers and especially our sponsors.

Please join us for:

Open Mic Night Friday 19th January

Australia Day 26th January 11am till late.

Triple J’S Hottest 100 27th January

Half Yearly AGM Wednesday 28th February.

So there’s plenty to do around the club whilst waiting for some decent boating weather.

Regards,
Kevin Bielby

General Manager Report
Dear Members,

With the warmer weather now here outstanding numbers of members of the public continue to take up the option of Social membership. The weekends are a buzz with plenty of families and friends enjoying the new facility, offers and entertainment.

Encourage your guests to join up and be part of something special.

The Swan Yacht Club is a club that gives members and locals access to an involved boating community and the social benefits of a “river-side lifestyle”.

Around The Club

Staffing

Sadly, Chef’s Noe and Keith will be leaving the Club in the coming month. Both boys have been loyal servants of the club over an extended period of time and provided pivotal support to the rapid development of the Clubs restaurant and management of the revised kitchen space whilst the club house was under construction.

Separately as mentioned in the Commodore’s report,
Emma Neville and Maddy Davis have left the Swan after a 3 year term. Emma is off to the east coast to further her education after offering the club and our member’s outstanding support in the bar. Whilst Maddy commences her new career as a nurse.

On behalf of the club I wish Noe, Keith, Maddy and Emma all the best for their future endeavours.

On a couple of positive notes I would like to
officially welcome aboard Tanya Critchley to the role of Food and Beverage Manager. Tanya brings with her a wealth of industry knowledge with an aim to continue to enhance the clubs food and beverage hospitality offer. Whilst Greg Roach joins the team as the club Bosun, replacing Kim Sorrell who will be committing more time to family and a busy holiday schedule. Greg will be concentrating to maintain the overall management of busy works program in company with the Trevor and the team.

The club will shortly confirm the appointment of a new Head Chef to drive our innovations and mission forward.

Smoking!
The Swan Yacht Club is a non-smoking venue. Smoking is not permitted in the licensed areas. Smoking is not only bad for your health it’s bad for those around you and the environment including the river system. Ensure you are 5 metre clear of the licenced areas when smoking. The club has invested in the two cigarette bins at the edge of the limestone walls and introduced another 2 bins that are fixed to the slipway fence. Please ensure you dispose of the butts appropriately.

Don't Forget To Book!
Members are reminded to book with reception if they are coming down for dinner. Booking a reservation assists with catering and minimizes any potential lengthy delays.

At the same time tables will only be reserved for a maximum of 15 minutes past the reservation time unless the club is advised of any reasonable delay.

Habitat NYD Garden Party
The recent Habitat Garden Party was an outstanding event and a credit to all involved who managed the 1300 strong crowd without incident.

The event was a clear indication of the club capability to host large scale financially viable events.

Thank you to the members who offered their support during the clean up the following day and to those members who attended the event.

Check out the clubs Facebook site for the full set of Garden Party and Club related event photos.

Marina
The marina currently sits at capacity with a number of members patiently waiting an opportunity on the Pen Wait list.

With a large number of vessels for sale it is expected some will be offered the opportunity to move in and enjoy the facility in the not too distant future.

Jetty 5 CCTV cameras are now back up and running and as the building works concentrate on the club surrounds extra parking has been created for trailers with relevant line marking to be introduced in the coming weeks.

Reminder to members to contact reception if you have organised a contractor to complete works of your vessel. Contractors attending unannounced will not be permitted to enter to marina facility.

Building
The focus for the coming months will be the final
completion of the clubs car parking areas and environmental management initiatives. Western Power recently introduced an upgrade which saw the club go without power on Monday and we apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused to members.

In summary, while the club complete the building works we will still be offering exciting new initiatives and offers including Australia Day activities, member’s sundowners and discounted offers. Check out the recently introduced lounge furniture for the deck area. Get on board and join us in Bringing Life to the River!

I look forward to seeing you all down at the Swan.

Regards,

Rear Commodore Power & Angling Report
Happy new year anglers; at last the Southerlies have abated and we were able to hold our monthly competition on Sunday 14th January. We have also completed our December competition since our last report (See below for Ian’s report).

It has been an enjoyable festive season at the club and now we are ready to buckle down for some hard-core fishing in the upcoming period of calm winds (hopefully). February – April will see our keen anglers heading wide to the FADS and beyond in search of the thrills that billfish sport fishing brings. Any members wishing to join a group of boats heading to the FADS can contact the Angling team and we will try and put a group together for a day of excitement.

And now our December Angling results from our intrepid Angling editor Ian Hall;

Angling Report
Our last 'Field Day' for the year was on Sunday 10th December, which was to make up for the August 'Field Day' that was cancelled, our actual December ’Field Day' on the Sunday 17th but was also cancelled due to Weather: so now we need to make up for that cancelled field day as well! The Demersal Ban is now lifted, and some good fish was brought in with two new Season Records and one new Club Record. Colin SANDY brought in a nice King George Whiting @ 0.938kg and our Captain, James APS brought in a huge Squid @ 1.341kg that not only took off the 'Season Record' but also clinched the 'Club Record'. Those records took James and Colin to the 1st and 2nd spots for the month with Travis trailing in 3rd spot but still the 'Top Gun' for the Season. Well Done Guys! Silver Tongue is still the 'Top Boat' for the season but there is still half the season to go till June. Also, great to see our Juniors winning prizes at most comps...keep it up guys!!

A Big Thank You to all our sponsors - Anglers Fishing World, Riverton-Rossmoyne Veterinary Hospital, Complete Angler, MM Electrical, Travis Sims Tackle and Phil Scott Sinkers! All who support the Angling Section with 'Gift Vouchers' and 'Prizes' for our Monthly Field Days.
A Big Thank You to all the SYC Members and visitors who support our weekly Raffles at the Club on Friday Nights, your support helps keep the Angling Section interesting and supports other needy activities within the Club, so dig deep as we need your support, help us help others!

All SYC Angling Members - The 'Dave Birchenough' and the 'School Boat’ are used on all for our 'Angling Field Days', so if you are a Angling Section Member without a boat and looking for a spot on a boat, please contact Travis SIMS by email - [email protected].
If all spots on the two boats are taken, we will try and find you a spot on another boat. The normal contribution towards Maintenance, Fuel & Bait is ~$50 for the day out on one of the Club Boats, juniors are 'free' accompanied by an adult. Bear in mind you could quite easily win your contribution back in prizes....so come along and have some fun, and as a SYC member you are entitled to join the Angling Section 'free of charge' as part of your SYC Club membership. You and your family are most welcome to come along and try your skills at fishing.

Intra Club Fishing Competition
This Annual Club event is going to be held on Sunday 8th April 2018! So please lock this day away in your diaries as it is expected to be our biggest event yet. If you want to get involved as a Sponsor, please contact any of our Angling Members or myself. All Sponsors from $200 upwards will benefit from free advertising at the Club, on our banners and flyers and on the day, itself. Come along and be part of this great day, it is a 'Club Point' event too! Angling Shirts & Caps & Boat Flags - We are taking orders for 'Angling Shirts & Caps', so if you want to place an order please email me on [email protected] your Size, Name on shirt and Quantity. Also, if you want an 'Angling Section Flag' for your boat, please contact Owen Blackbeard - 0418 945 794

Vice Commodore Report
As we bid farewell to another year and welcome a new one I’m pleased to report that our club is more popular than ever.

New Years Eve was a tremendous success with more than 300 attendees and revellers partying well into the night. For the third year in a row “Hi-NRG” rocked the Swan with their extensive repertoire and showmanship they proved to be once again, the right choice of band for the night.
My yardstick for gauging a bands popularity is based upon the percentage of the crowd that are on the dance floor. Well Hi-NRG certainly excelled with young and old alike dancing the night away and even a conga line appeared later in the evening snaking its way through the crowded dancefloor. Our very own Brian Piggott and Kim Sorrell thrilled the audience with their own rendition of Living on the Swan. Great job guys well done. All in all one of the best new years I’ve been apart of.

The very next day saw the Habitat Garden Party event come to our doors with around 1300 people present. Again a well run and organised event and kudos to our management and staff for yet another successful function.

Well that’s it from me for another month, just a reminder of our up coming Open Mic Night on Friday 19th January which is always a crowd pleaser. Hope to see you there.

Fair winds and smooth seas.

Warm Regards,
Paul Nicholls

Ladies Auxiliary Report
Happy New Year to All,

Hope it started off on a good note for everyone. Ours did, welcoming in the New Year on the deck at the Swan Yacht Club with many good friends. A great night had by all. The decision to hold the event in the upstairs only was definitely a good one, more intimate, and everyone had the benefit of relaxing on the deck enjoying the company and the view, or enjoying the music and dancing inside.

We headed off to Garden Island early the following morning for a few days, with slight headaches, and enjoyed the wonderful mornings, and put up with the howling seabreezes in the afternoon. Nothing we’re not used to at this time of year, and nothing that a good book, or catching up with friends can’t fix. All in all a wonderful start to 2018.

Not much to report at this time, lots to do around the club over the summer months, Open Mic night is on the 19th, and Australia Day the 26th. Keep your eye on the E-News for updates. The winds will cease and the boating will become more enjoyable.

Remember to respect your club, our wonderful staff and ask your guests to do the same. We are bidding a fond farewell to the lovely Emma who is going to Sydney to further her horizons. We wish her well and will miss her pleasant, smiling face around the club. Thanks Emma.

Until next month,
