New Friday Twilight Series
In response to demand and to take advantage of the fantastic weather at this time of the year, the Club is introducing a new socially oriented Friday twilight series commencing 9 February to 30 March 2018 (8 races), starting at 1800 hrs with a race duration of approx. 40 mins so we are back at the Club for the 1900 hrs Members Draw and a BBQ on the lawn. Entry will be $10 per race. All OTB and keelboat classes are welcome Hire of the Club’s Pacers and Elliots is highly encouraged, contact Ian Fox, Training & Development Manager on [email protected] (first in best dressed). Look out for the race documents and on-line entry, which will be posted on the Club Website next week.

Australian Yachting Championship
Australia’s premier keelboat event, the Australian Yachting Championship returns to Victoria and will be hosted by Sandringham Yacht Club from today, Friday 19 to Sunday 21 January 2018. Racing will be held across four keelboat divisions and one Multihull division with up to eight races for keelboats across the three days and will be a combination of windward / leeward and passage racing. The Regatta handbook and Sailing Instructions are available on the regatta website. Best wishes to all of the Royals' boats who have entered.

Next Weekend: Festival of Sails
Next (long) weekend is the Festival of Sails, commencing on Friday 26 January with the passage race to Geelong. Pier 41 are putting on a buffet dinner for $40 per person for Thursday 25 January to cater for crews who are spending the night at the Club before the big race. It's best that bookings are made online via TryBooking, but if you’d like to pay on the night instead please let Pier 41 know you’re coming so they can prepare. Take away bacon and egg rolls, coffees and salad rolls will be available on the Friday morning. Competitors can find all race documents on the Festival of Sails website.

Wednesday Twilight Racing - S.I. 9. Obstructions
A number of competitors in the Wednesday Twilight series are falling foul of S.I. 9 – Obstructions. The chartlet pictured (click here to see the larger image) shows the area that is defined as an obstruction in the sailing instructions. Yachts entering this area are subject to protest either by fellow competitors or by the Race Committee. The Race Officer may also monitor the boundary of the zone from time to time to check on compliance with the SIs. Read more...

S80 Victorian Championship
In a series that came down to the last leg of the last race, Skipjack from HBYC just edged out past Champion Intrusion. In the seven race series over three days, the Melbourne weather certainly made things interesting! Port Phillip Women's Championship Series Round 2
The next round of the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series (PPWCS) will be the Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC) to be hosted by Sandringham Yacht Club on Sunday 11 February. WISC information and race documentation can be found on the SYC WISC webpage and updates on the WISC Facebook page. A full calendar of PPWCS dates and information about the series are on the WGIS website.

Port Phillip Women's Championship Series Round 3
The RMYS Jennifer Goldsmith Perpetual Trophy will be held on Sunday 18 February 2018 and will include spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions, with the spinnaker race being Race 3 of the Port Phillip Women's Championship Series. Entry is $30 which will be donated to melanoma research in memory of Jennifer Goldsmith. For more information, race documentation and to enter, see the RMYS website.

Clipper Race Sydney Hobart Leg 4
The Clipper fleet has arrived in Airlie Beach after leaving Hobart and the crews are enjoying a short break before continuing the leg to China. In the following update, Catherine North reflects on her Sydney Hobart Yacht Race experience aboard Sanya Serenity Coast.

Another tick off the list. We were almost Sydney Hobart Clipper 70 Divisional winners but another redress moved us from 1st to 2nd. But..... we got line honours again! We are sailing really well as a team and are pretty happy with the results. Read more...

The Gold Coast 2018 Queen's Baton Relay will be making a visit to Williamstown at around 2.30pm on Saturday, 10 February. RBYC Sail in Company & BBQ
RBYC invite you to join them in a cruise on Saturday, 3 February 2018 from Fawkner Beacon at 4pm, to Royal Brighton Yacht Club for a BBQ at the RBYC clubhouse. The fine print...
Living Doll meets her sad demise
On the return journey last Sunday from the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Hollywood Boulevard, formerly Living Doll, ran into trouble in the form of a large sea creature. Crew on board reported hearing carbon fibre cracking and had to be rescued from the sinking yacht. The full story is on The Age website and an AMSA video of the rescue can be viewed on Facebook.
